Because religion attracts wackos. People who have problems are the types who will turn to ready answers for their problems, whether or not they are good ready answers. The Bible (and most "holy" texts) are written with a very authoritative tone but are vague enough to be interpretted how one wishes. This gives people with problems something to latch onto.

The extremely religious people are the ones that put Jesus on the cross, right. That's really sad, for those parents to act that way. To have a relationship with Jesus, takes that guilt away. You no longer have to live a life like you did before. Having a relationship with God has nothing to do with God. I am labeled a Christian, because I believe in God. I go to a non-denominational Church.
Please dont get having a relationship with Jesus, and religion confused.

Guilty about what? And how could guilt motivate faith? That makes absolutely no sense. I am a Christian (a follower of Jesus and a believer in the Word of the Lord) and my life reflects that. I believe that Jesus Christ was the ultimate role model for appropriate behavior, so I try to walk in His ways. There is no guilt involved in helping others, being compassionate, giving of yourself, and being forgiving. There may be some people who claim to be religious and yet are abusive to others, but in my view that doesn't really make them religious. Christianity isn't just reflected through your words or what you say you believe - it's reflected more through your actions.

Religious people, by and large, aren't the ones doing drugs or having abortions or selling sex or sleeping around or any of that other stuff.
Stereotyping people is no way to discuss an issue.
And what's your definition of "abusive"? It seems that nowadays, parents who don't spoil their kids rotten are often accused of "abusing" them.
Well, if expecting a certain standard of behavior from their children makes them "abusive," and if carrying out punishment for those times when the standard is not met is "abusive," then my parents were also "abusive." And so, probably will I be if I ever have kids.

Well, I don't agree that guilt is what motivates people's faith. But I do know one family who is fairly involved religiously, but the parents are abusive to some of the children. I wish I could explain what happens, but trust me that not all people who are religious are like that.

I agree 100%. I have never met so many control freaks in my life as I have with religious people. They take offence at every little thing and they actually drive their kids away from home because the kids can't do anything right. They are as neurotic as hell!

I have to say that "screwed up" or "normal" for that matter is quite subjective. Just because they don't follow the societal norm, does not mean they are screwed up. It will look very strange because you have been conditioned and programmed by society, but different does not = weird. I will agree that some begin to try to shift the status quo in their direction and they can be pretty scary about it (religious or not).

Actually, I think it's the other way around - ironically, their religion, especially if followed intensly, motivates their actions. Most religions call for idealistic or perfect humans; in other words, absolutely no sins. But it's only human nature to sin and when they do, they fail miserably. It is this ultimate and unavoidable failure (to be perfect) that drives their extreme and screwed-up behavior.

Religion is just like drugs, alcohol, etc. It's a mind and mood altering drug. People that require that sort of alteration are going to choose one or all of these things. So yes, it makes sense that screwy people get hooked on religion.
Personally, I'd rather they get hooked on marijuana. At least that would keep them from causing trouble.

What do you mean by "screw up"? Anyone who does things differently than you? Personally I think children should be controlled but if you think just let them do whatever they want, I respect your right to believe that and hope you enjoy the consequences of that philosophy.
