This is very George Carlin-esque.

I'm with you. I'll have whatever day fate brings me, not what the clerk says.

But in all fairness, the clerk only means well and are doing what "the man" tells them to do...

I guess you can have whatever kind of day you want. The clerk is saying what he/she is supposed to say- as a part of the job.

I suppose the saying could be "Have a Day!" What do you think?

I always tell people who leave the gift shop to have a nice day. I also (try) to greet everyone that comes in. It is called politeness, and it is something that is in short supply these days. You are in no way required to even acknowledge the greeting or the farewell, but most people do say 'hello' back, and 'thanks' on the way out. Even if you have other plans, a return of politeness is always nice.

I make it a point to keep talking and try to start a small conversation... as long as they don't appear busy.

I absolutely detest how this nation is built on the premise that it is 'strange' to talk with strangers and interact with them beyond a purely 'professional' relationship. I am more willing to tip someone if they actually carry a conversation about something. I value openness in people.

To answer your question... it is not a requirement. In today's society you really don't even have to make eye contact with the clerk. God forbid that they keep talking to you and you learn their name. I mean, who really cares what kind of day THEY are having... just give me my double cheeseburger already so I can listen to my ipod all day.

:)

What I always say when the clerk suggests that is "Why don't you make me?"

It's just politeness, and conversation for conversations sake. Just like when people ask you how you and and you say fine but mostly because its just an average greeting without real interest in the meaning.

No, he's just wishing your day goes well for you.

If that includes successfully killing someone, that, too, is included.

That would, however, mean that your target had a bad day.
