My old cat, Jynx, would rarely respond to her name... I mean, she knew it, because she would look at me when I called her, but would turn away rather snottishly. However, she would haul-butt towards me if I imitated a meow, or played my recorder for her. She also knew the words, "no" and "get down" (VERY important!!!).

My dad's cat, Buster, would claw on this one little footstool, and every time he did, he'd get a treat. That way, he left everything else alone.

Cats can be trained, but expect them to have an "I'm better than you" attitude, and because of it, they're going to want a reason to submit themselves to your will... not out of love, or loyalty, like a dog, but rather, out of self-serving interests. Give them that reason, and they can be trained.

Hell yeagh thay can. I had abuddy who was a Kennelmaster for Dog handlers and one night I bet him he couldn't train his wifes cat to sit and heel. He looked at me wiht that look, you know the one where the $20 you just ran your mouth about is going to end up in someones beer fund, and he went outside with Mr. Wiskers and a small choke chain. 2 hours later that cat would not only sit and heel but it would come on command and lay down where he said without moving. (By the way he did not hurt the cat and like my Wifes cat he was and still is his best friend. Choke collars can be used without doing permanent harm to an animal) so yes cats can be trained!

Yes, cats can be trained. They like a routine. My cats had a routine that I called them to the back porch at night for dinner and they went to bed. If I fell asleep on the couch, they would wake me up! I know they can be trained to use the toilet (human toilet) and to walk on a leash. You have to start when they are small, though, and be as consistent as you would be with a dog. It's actually quite fun once they learn, and they will NOT let YOU forget either!

Have you EVER seen a Police Cat? Or a seeing eye cat?
How about a search and rescue cat? Circus cats? Assistance Cats? Bomb sniffing cats? Cats going for rides in the car? Cats walking, heeling, staying, lying down, sitting, coming when you call, fetching a ball and bringing it back.
I've NEVER seen any cats that can herd sheep or cattle. Can you imagine a Hunting Cat? A cat Pointer? A Guard Cat?

You can't train them to stay off the counters(that you make your sandwich on and they've JUST been in their sanbox of POOP) the furniture and to NOT shred your favorite chair. How does anyone think they can be trained at all????
Independence? Noooooo, STUPIDITY.

At dog shows, dogs respond to their handlers, the sit, stay and heel. What do cats do? NOTHING. WHY? BECAUSE THEY CAN'T!
Frisbee catching Cats????

NO, their pea sized brains and their lazy nature prevents them from learning ANYTHING useful.

Yes cats can be trained, they are very smart. I have two , they are inside outside cats. When I want them to come in I whistle and they come running no matter where they are. I will ask them if they want tuna and they run to the cabinet and wait. I have many conversations with my cats and they understand, they are very smart. So my answer is most definitely cats can be trained. My babies stay in at night, I won't allow them out.

Not really. Cats are independent types. A cat doesn't always look for a "pack leader" to tell it what to do like a dog does.
But if your cat really loves food you can teach a few basic commands like "sit" "offathat" and "NO" My brother taught his cat to "shake hands" but you had to have tuna in the other hand or no deal. Kitty wouldn't do it just because you asked.
Now Lucy C. Tabby has taught me to fetch. She enjoys chasing the bottle caps that come off of 2 liter soda bottles. I would pick them up off the floor when I found one and she'd chase it. One day I was lying around and she comes up to me with a bottle cap in her mouth. She drops it next to me and stands there. I pick it up and throw it. She chases it and brings it back. I am dumbfounded. We do it five ar six times and then game over as suddenly as it began. We do this about 2 or three times a week.
It's all her deal. Cats!

If ur used to having a dog, then dont even try. BUT i just got a cat for the first time ever, people told me they rnt like dogs, but she obeys, come here, sit, NO (dead handy cos she's really psycho) erm thats about it, she will bring her fav toy to be played with but wont 'fetch' it. They seem to be very individual and do what they want most of the time.

the problem with cats is that they believe you're the one who needs training ! They just do whatever they want. My cat knows how to bring back a small ball I throw to him, but only because he knows that if he bring it back, I'll throw it again, and he could play. But if he prefers to see me move in the whole apartment after the ball, he wont bring it back.
Like I said, cats do what they want, not what you want them to do.

yes they can. start when they are a young kitten just like you would with a puppy. also just like a puppy give them a treat when he/she does something you want him/her to do. i know this is possible because i had my cat able to sit and go to the door when i said out all on command
