I don't recommend any of the image editing programs that come standard with any computer - they just don't have the level of functionality to make the effort worthwhile. You'll end up with a fake looking photo that you won't be happy with.

You need Photoshop or another moderate to high-end image editing software. Adobe (makers of Photoshop) have alternatives to Photoshop that cost less but provide a rich enough range of tools to accomplish what you want to do. Check them out online to see if there's anything suitable within your price range. You can also ask around to see if anyone can give you a copy of Photoshop, or search the Net for a download. Take care when searching sites for downloads though - it's an awful lot of effort and frustration before you actually find one that works.

Depending what the photo looks like and what you want to do with it, you may even be able to find someone willing to do it for you. I do stuff like that in Photoshop all the time, and it's not always a lot of time or effort, depending on the original image and the desired change(s).

Using photoshop, you have to find a way to select yourself to the exclusion of your original background, typically copy that layer of you, paste it into a new layer. Paste the new background under the "new you" layer, and you're done.

It's not that easy unless you have a white/black sheet or green screen background. Solid colors are a little easier to eliminate, but you still have the problem of "mixed" colors on the edges.

If it is an Avatar just click on the background selection that you want.
