Are there statistics for what % of time an elevator ever gets stuck? How is it that people who live or work in high rises are not afraid they wil get stuck and rely that the elevator will work?- I did get stuck for a few minutes so I am asking this question.

It's purely electronics, my dear...I got stuck on one in the hospital I was working at (and with a dead person I was taking to the morgue, I might add! Imagine my surprize!)...It was a changeover in the electrical system...The only way I got out, was to come down thru a ladder, but the dead person waited patiently...

As the first person said, what prevents it from malfunctioning is periodic maintenance, but even with the best maintenance it is bound to stop once in a while with people trapped inside.

As for people who work and live in high rise buildings, they just have to deal with the fact that machines stop sometimes and elevators are one of them. The most important is that people are kept safe and for this, there are several reliable mechanism that do not fail as often as the stops.

As to getting stuck/trapped, just keep calm and never try crawling out or jumping out of an elevator stuck between floors unless instructed and helped by some one who knows what they're doing. In these situations, the first thing to do is to shut off the power to avoid the risk that the elevator will start moving while the passengers are trying to get out. Another risk is falling back into the shaft after jumping off an elevator stuck between two floors.

So, as nerve racking as it is, just sit there and wait for help.

Elevators only get "stuck" when the power goes off. Many high rise buildings have backup power to keep them running for a while once the juice goes off.

I got stuck once for a couple of hours during a power failure. No fun!
