At 12 months he's old enough to understand if you explain to him that it hurts Mummy if you pull her hair. Try helping him to empathise with you. My 21 month old daughter constantly fiddles with my hair - most of the time it's not a problem but if she pulls it I say, "Ow, that hurt Mummy, be gentle please." Calmly and firmly is the best way to go. Good luck!
Please don't, as people have suggested above, hit him! Violence is not an answer to violence, and smacking children is never acceptable.

Give your son something else to climb on. Make sure he knows that your hair is not rope.
I have a two year old son and he started doing the same thing when he was nine months old. He is very active and needs an outlet for all that energy. The only time he gets close to my hair now is when we cuddle and when I carry him. I do have the advantage of having a nine year old for him to play with, so that is why I recommend you get him something to help him release his need to move and climb and jump and run and just be a little boy.
Above all, no matter how hard you think it might be, you must make him see that it hurts you and that it is not good to pull your hair.

You pull there hand away and say very sternly 'No!You don't pull hair!' Or you could put them down in the crib/rocker/floor/ and totally ignore them no matter how much they cry. Unless the child is in pain,I would just let the little fellow cry himself out.In this he will now understand that pulling hair will not get you cookie points from mom.I know it just might be a phase, but phases, can turn into habits. So just keep that in mind, through whatever 'phase' hes going through.

My son does the same and my son is one is three weeks time. I just tell him no and now when I say it he stops doing it. Its going to take time for him to learn not to do it but its better than cutting your hair off. Good luck

Firmly tell him no, tell him it hurts mommy. Be persistant don't correct him one time and let him do it the next. You may have to swat his bottom a time or two. Good luck, and if nothing else he will grow out of it. Or you could keep your hair pulled up.

Well, I was going to say pull his back.. but he doesn't have any .... hmmm.... Perhaps try the empatic approach.. this worked with my son.. when he pulls your hair.. cry and say ow.. tell him that it hurt. Put him down and don't pay attention to him for a minute or 2..

My 11 month old does the same thing! It drives me crazy!I firmly tell her no,and grab her hand, but at this age, what can you really do?To the brilliant person that suggests spanking a 12 month old, your child will be the one in prison.
