I am not talking about people who are dieting & are strictly watching their caloric intake. I'm talking about everyone else.... You know, the folks who eat big American-sized portions & pay little attention to what they're actually consuming each day..... Any ideas?

Worldwide the average is 2,470 calories per day but there are large differences from one country to the next.

Americans have the highest calorie intake in the world at an average of 3,330 per person per day and just behind are the Dutch at 3,320 per day. In joint third place are Russians and Australians on 3,280 per day (Australia used to be top).

In many developing nations the average calories per head per day are between 1,500 and 2,000, Indonesia for example is 1,790. In the worlds poorest countries the total is less than 1,500 and in Burkina Faso for example it is 1,220. In times of drought and famine the figures fall significantly.

The recommended daily consumption for women living in developed nations is 1,800 to 2,000 per day and for men it is 2,500 to 2,700 per day. These are averegaes and don't take account of metabolism and lifestyle.

The minimum per day is approximately 1,500 calories - this is what'sneeded just to keep your body ticking over (roughly one calorie per minute). Anything less than this is likely to lead to malnutrition and diet related conditions.

There is no daily maximum as it depends on the person and what they're doing. For example, mountaineers and polar explorers need to take in over 10,000 calories a day if they are to maintain their bodies (a lot of these calories are used just to keep warm). Active sports enthusiasts regularly need 5,000 or more calories a day and a manual worker 3 to 4,000 a day.

At pyramid.gov u will find what ur specific calorie needs are. For example I am a active( work out 1hr-2hr a day) 20 yr old female so because I burn a lot of calories my caloric intake is to be 2200 calories per day. Now if u lead a sedentary lifestyle( no exercise), u are supposed to eat like only 1200 calories a day (torture!)
But Americans consume toooooooo many calories daily and dont burn them off. 1 mcdonalds meal can serve as ur max daily limit of calories, (bad!)
did I help

You asked about people, but I assume you mean people in the USA. Certainly the answer would be different if you were asking about people in Africa or Europe, etc...

The average citizen of the USA consumes about 2000 - 2500 calories per day. We should be consuming about 1500 - 1800 calories per day.

In medicine its like that folks:(im a medical student):

Men need 2200- 2800 calories per day.

Women need 1700- 2300 calories per day.

That mens if u consume this amount of calories per day u will neither get fatter nor thinner (u will remain the same).....(talking about normal energy expenditures...like walking some time from here to their....doing some effort ).

It really differs from nation to nation...person to person......in some areas where people are farmers....they need to take us much as slightly over 3000 calories without getting any fatter...((because of the high energy consumption in work ).

Well- I weigh 220lb and to maintain my weight it takes 2800 calories, so I should be eating much less to lose weight- but of coarse I am not. I would say 2200-2600 is about right. Ideally men should eat around 1800-2000 caloreis and women should eat around 1500-1800 calories
