No, I did nit mean private security or body guards. I meant trained organised killers for money in an American army uniform.

There are 120.000 mecenarcies in the American army in Iraq. Check the sources.

a mercenary is a person (not necessarily a soldier) who works for a private company, which is then contracted to a nation or organization to perform paramilitary duties. the answer to your question is ZERO, the american troops have no need of a mercenary as it would detract from the organization and chain of command that is inherint in the american military. now there ARE american "mercenaries", or really private security professionals, who are working in iraq, but not for the u.s. military unless it is in an intelligence role as an advisor to the command.

I beg to differ on everyone's answer. There are private companies such as Black Water or Shadow Company which employ former special forces from all over the world. I've actually met a couple in Falluja.

There are the private defense contractors like Blackwater and Haliburton. If I were to guess probably 1000.

These guys are usually wearing the khaki uniforms with rifles.

I do take acception to the comment that all soldiers are mercs. Mercs are soldiers who do it solely for the money and not for their country. I find it completely absurd for someone to not get paid, how are they supposed to support their family without cash.

Well if you have ever served in the military you would know that there are no mercenaries in our military, oue troops don't get paid squat for what they do and what they put up with. So there are zero mercenaries in our military. Mercenaries are all about making money they don't care who they fight for who wins or looses they care about themselves and the money.
