Why? Whats the point? You don't buy them from a fridge. It doesn't keep them fresher and eggs only have a shelf life of a few weeks now so why the hell do people still store eggs in the fridge!!!
Even fridge makers put a stupid little egg tray type thing in there.
ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Jay is right, In the UK eggs are never refridgerated in supermarkets. I never have and never will keep eggs in a fridge - my Mum always said there was no need and Mum knows best! If using eggs in home baking they have to be room temperature anyway and I certainly couldn't be bothered to wait for them to warm up!

I'm lucky enough to have a friend whose family keeps chickens so we get our eggs very fresh and with beautiful dark orange yolks. Wow - I'm hungry now ...

As everyone else has stated, you do buy eggs from a refrigerated case - I have never seen eggs that were not refrigerated. In the US, eggs are required to be kept at or below 45 °F during transport and at stores to prevent any possible bacteria present from multiplying. If an egg has been un-refrigerated for more than 2 hours it should be thrown away. Refrigeration also really does keep eggs fresher - the whites get thinner; the yolks get flatter and break more easily when the egg is not refrigerated.

So use that little egg tray for your eggs!

When I worked in catering, it was the guidelines issued by the Environmental Health Department that eggs should be stored in the fridge.

You are right though, most UK supermarkets do not store the eggs in the fridge.

All supermarkets that I've ever been to keep the eggs refrigerated. People keep eggs in the fridge because they stay fresher for longer periods of time.
Some baking recipies actually call for eggs to be chilled before cracking them.

Here in the USA, the eggs most buy are from the grocery store, where they have been stored in refrigeration for weeks since the chicken laid them. Refrigeration will slow down the decay process.
However, I buys mine fresh from the farm on a weekly basis and these eggs are so fresh that I do not have to worry about refrigerating them.

If you crack and egg and it looks/ smells ok, it's okay.

Once refrigerated the eggs should be kept at that temp. It may not be true for eggs never chilled, but cold eggs do spoil faster if put back in room temp.

The point is that a commercially produced egg could harbor salmonella or other food illness. Spoiling isn't just about flavor but about keeping people from getting food poisioning from animal products. Room temp = ideal breeding ground for bacteria.

I don't know where you buy your eggs, but I always take eggs from a fridge in the grocery store. If you mean that gen are not refrigerated when they lay eggs.....well cows don't live in fridge but you need to keep your steaks in the fridge if you don't like them rotten

It is rather silly since eggs are much easier to use at room temperature, less chance of them breaking when you go to fry one if its at normal temp, I dont keep my eggs in the fridge.

I think you should do an experiment. Don't store it in the fridge and eat it yourself. If someone else decides to ask this question you'll have an answer for them.

One reason besides the obvious (as I understand you people are not able to grasp the obvious) That little egg holder is to keep them out of the way so they do not get broken.
