In studio photography and shooting portrait. How far subject should be from backdrop?

I have had my subjects anywhere form 2 inches form the backdrop to over 12 feet away. The main cncern is the ficus of the back ground and shadows. if you have a good light set up and ratio one light will be a kicker behind the subject to light the background to get rid of any shadows, that and distance helps. A good rule of thumb is at least 3 feet.

It really doesn't matter unless your backdrop has graphics on it. Just make sure that there is no flash shadow that will show. The further from the flash that your backdrop is, the darker it will be. If it's too close and white, it may be too bright. I would suggest some experiments before you photograph a paying client.

3 to 4 ft. ... 3 ft from backdrop,10 ft from camera, lights are 3 ft from camera.

Try different shots. Too close, and there might be a dark shadow around someone's dark hair, making their head look bigger.
