Sorry to sound rude but I just don't get it and living in the south have no Muslims to ask.
Why the Peace be upon him rhetoric every time his name is mentioned or typed?
Doesn't thought count?
Thank you

I realise that it is spoken asa sign of courtesy/respect/praise.
I wanted to know exactly where and why?
Can not just saying , he's great, or perhaps thinking PBUH be as good?

Would a "PBUH" key be a good idea for some Muslims or would that not count?
Why does PBUH count, are the people saying it out in full as they type?
If that is the case why type it
I am confused now

Thank you for your question!
It's out of respect and in Islam we respect ALL prophets not just Mohammad (PBUH)!
Is a phrase that Muslims are required to say after mentioning the name of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, Jesus Christ, Abraham and all the other prophets cited in the Qur'an.
"Send the Salat on Allah's messengers and prophets for Allah sent them as He sent me."
"The Messenger of Allah said: Whoever sends one salah upon me, Allah will send ten upon him."
"One morning the Messenger of Allah was in a cheerful mood and looked happy. They said, 'Oh Messenger of Allah, this morning you are in a cheerful mood and look happy.' He said, Of course, just now someone [an angel] came to me from my Lord [Allah] and said, 'Whoever among your Ummah sends Salah upon you, Allah will record for him ten good deeds and will erase for him ten evil deeds, and will raise his status by ten degrees, and will return his greeting with something similar to it.'"
Out of respect, a Muslim says that whether it's in writing or in spoken words! I say it in my heart/mind when I read his name, but I say it in a whisper when someone else mentions his name!
PBUH= Peace Be Upon Him
In Arabic= Salah Allah Aleyhe Wa Salam (for Mohammad PBUH) and Alayhe Al Salat Wa Al Salam (for all the other prophets)

There're three main points to show here as a reply to your question which I really respected and wanted to reply to.
First, I wanna say that neither you nor any other non-Muslim can understand and estimate how a Muslim loves our prophet Mohamed (Peace Be Upon Him) .
By the way, I wanted by "our" in "our prophet" here to refer to the human kind as a whole. If you don't know this, Mohamed (PBUH) was sent to all the people from the moment he was connected to Allah (or God) by the angel of inspiration (at an age of 40).
I'll try to explain this here as far as I can,
Every Muslim loves Allah the most, there is no larger love in his life than his love to Allah.
then comes his love to prophet Mohamed (PBUH) which is larger than any other love except his love to Allah.
Second, "Peace Be Upon Him" or simply "PBUH" means that Allah and his angels love him and that Allah have his mercy upon him.
Third, when a Muslim says so (PBUH) only once, he believes that Allah will have his mercy upon him ten times.
I hope you understand now why we, Muslims, should say so when we mention Mohamed (PBUH) or he is just mentioned in front of us.

Because Muhammad (saws) is a Prophet who is well beloved by all Muslims, and it is a way of making a difference between him and ordinary men. Please note that we remember all prophets when mentioning them, not only Muhammad (saws).
As someone mentioned before, he requested that we pray for him, and that is why we say this outloud when we mention his name.
In Islam, what you say holds great importance, this is why we do it every time, it is a very deep religion full of symbolisms and protocols, which make us who we are and make us close to our God. Lastly, because Allah (swt) is pleased with Muhammad (saws) and therefore, we like to praise all and everyhting that pleases Him.
Hope this helps.

Judging by the way mohommed behaved during his life and the utter contempt in which he held everybody else, I'm surprised that anybody wants to wish him peace. It's just the usual idiocy from a bunch of religious fanatics. The best thing to do with people like him, hitler, genghis khan, caligula, and all the other tyrants of history is to use them as object lessons of how not to behave in a civilised society and leave them to rot in the dustbin of history. apart from all that, what did the man ever prophecy? andwer - NOTHING. he wasn't a prophet at all, just another empire building conman.

"Peace" is the most common word on a Muslim's tongue. Whenever two people meet, they exchange greetings, wishing each other peace: "Peace be upon you." But peace cannot prevail except through justice. Since the concept of justice may differ from one man to another, or from one society to another, Muslims believe that real justice is that which is specified by Allah (God).
imaa- e- mufassal (oath of every muslim)
i beleive in Allah, in His angels, in His books, in His messengers, in Last day -Day of Judgement and in the fact that everything good or bad is decided by Allah, and in L ife after Death.
well do u know that there are 1,24,000 prophets in islam right from Adam-pbuh to muhammed-pbuh. and we all add 'peace and blessings of Allah be upon them' to all of them not just one or two. in islam a muslim should consider all of them equal as they are brothers in faith of ONE GOD. i 'm giving here the 25 most important prophets of islam.:
adam - pbuh
enoch - pbuh
noah- pbuh
hud- pbuh
salih- pbuh
abraham- pbuh
ishmael- pbuh
isaac- pbuh
lot- pbuh
jacob- pbuh
joseph- pbuh
shu haib- pbuh
job- pbuh
moses- pbuh
aaron- pbuh
ezeikel- pbuh
david- pbuh
solomon- pbuh
elias- pbuh
elisha- pbuh
jonah- pbuh
zakariya- pbuh
john the baptist - pbuh
jesus- pbuh
muhammed- pbuh
its a mark of respect as these people suffered a great deal just for our betterment, Allah's guidance to mankind which began with Adam-pbuh and completed by muhammeed-pbuh. and dont u say rest in peace for anyone and everyone. similarly, we say peace and blessings of Allah be upon them.
this is not just for muhammed-pbuh but Allah made it for every one of his messenger.
quran 2:285
"as muslims we must beleive in all prophets and messengers"
