I would like to know how the very tall cranes are erected. The 'T' shaped one with large concrete weights at one end. Are they erected using the smaller mobile cranes first?

Yes, they are assembled low with another crane. Then they jack them up and add the structure under them to gain height. Sometimes they do this little by little so you see the crane height continue to go up as the building is raised. Sometimes they go ahead and jack the crane up to the max height they will use. If the cranes are outside the structure they are building, they take it back down in reverse order.

They have a larger crane that they use to lift up the bits of the crane and build it that way. To lift that larger crane into place there's an even bigger crane, which occupies a whole football pitch when it is assembled. It's huge!

How does it get there? The galactic federation rents the Earth Council an orbital crane, which moves all the pieces with a tractor beam ;)

If you are refering to the "hammerhead" type, they are 'self-erecting'. A small jib crane is set up and surrounds itself with the four sides of the crane's "trunk". It then hauls itself up on vertical rails inside the trunk and lifts up the next four sections which are bolted around it. The jib is set up on the ground and runs itself up on vertical rails outside the trunk as this goes up.

They're largely prefabricated. The central column is constructed on the ground, then lifted up. Then someone climbs up to the top of that and puts a winch there to lift the rest of the machinery up.
