if details are unimportant perhaps the whole shebang is equally unimportant and we should ignore it totally?

When He was born is important, because God's timing for salvation came as the Bible says, "in the fullness of time" and there is significance to that. What color he was is not mentioned anywhere in the Bible and it is not important, but whether or not He is the Son of God is of absolute importance because if He was not the Son of God there is salvation for no one, and if you don't believe that He is the Son of God there is no salvation for you as an individual. and you will spend all of eternity in Hell. Now whether you think it is important or not doesn't make much difference to anyone but you, but it is tremendously important.

No, details ARE important, but SOME aren't.
You are correct that it doesn't really matter when Jesus was born, or what color He was.
And this might surprise you, but it isn't really as important that He was the son of God, either.
Adam was a son of God, Moses was a son of God, even you are a son of God, in the sense that you were created by God. The angels were created by God too. That didn't stop them from being disobedient either. Some were fallen, when satan was kicked out of heaven too. Jesus is God's only begotten son, because He was born of a woman, and not with the help of a man. The virgin birth.
The fact Jesus died, and rose again for the sins of the world is the most important detail, because it shows us that we too, can have eternal life through Jesus Christ.

Its very important to know WHY Jesus was SENT to earth. The disobedience of Adam and Eve caused death to 'enter the world'. [Genesis 2;16,17] Prior to this, Adam and Eve had the prospect of living forever. Adam, as a perfect man, lost us all that prospect of living forever. It then took another perfect man to 'buy' it back for us. That was Jesus. God himself supplied his own son for our benefit. And although being all powerful, God does not circumvent his own judicial system. All the angels, who all have free will, are looking on. God is always perfect in justice. There are two basics that confuse the main religions. Jesus is NOT God, but God's son. And Jesus was SENT by God. It puts a whole new aspect on the Bible.

It does matter. God chose Israel, and made Jesus Jewish to fufill prophecies about his messiah in the Jewish scriptures, (the Christian Old Testament.) It is important that He is the son of God because only He has the power to forgive sins.

ROFLMAO
when you need a screwdriver, do you care who manufactured it, the color of the handle?

Does it have to be snap-on or will craftsman do?
Is blue handle OK or does it have to have a red handle?
As you say details matter!

Only God could have died for our sin to make things right with himself.
