Where do you get the idea that firemen have so much time off. They work shifts, which can be anywhere from 8 hrs. to 12 hrs. straight, and they usually get the next two days off. When they are on duty, hell can break loose at anytime.

A lot of a fireman's time is spent preparing equipment in the event of a fire. Because of the destruction that a fire can cause (very very serious and life threatening) there is an allocated fire department covering most areas. Which of course means that they have a lot of staff "waiting" for the possibility of a fire to happen! Staff are then allocated times where they are at the station checking equipment but other times they are on call- in case something should happen. The less fire there is the more time they have off!

Just hope that there's no fire anywhere since you ask a question like this :)
With a job that's life threatening, it's a good thing that they have looooooong breaks.
In my experience fires don't break out that often in the districts where the Fire Dept. has its reach, hence the long breaks :)

Sometimes their job can be highly stressful...so to avoid burn out they have more time off..plus they work 24hrs and are on call the whole next day.
