Hi Heddie...if you are looking for premium quality cat food look into Innova EVO, Nature's Variety Prairie, Wellness, Wysong, Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul. They contain no grains, highest meat content of any dry food and prepared by a special process to preserve natural flavors and nutritional values. Science Diet, Iams, Purina, Friskies and the like contain high levels of corn, corn meal, byproduct and other unhealthy preservatives in their brands.

Contrary to what we en masse all have learned the pet nutrition industry is a multi-billion dollar industry full of hype and false claims. Consumers are being duped into believing that they are feeding their pets healthy foods, when in actuality they are feeding nothing more than inferior meat meals, cheap grains (including corn and soy), fillers, by-products, pesticides, preservatives and toxins. Soy is one of the top allergens— substances that cause allergic reactions. The first link below goes into detail why. It's a worthy read.

The following links are to each of the premium brands. Hopefully everyone here answering your question will consider having a look too.

The best cat food on the market is Iams or Eukenuba (they're from the same company). This food has been recommmended to me by 2 different vets for my cats.

I use the Iams, and it makes my 2 cats very healthy. Neither cat is overweight because the Iams is made with real food and nutrients and it has a weight control supplement in the food.

It also prevents hairballs and when the cats eat Iams, they don't use the litter box half as much as a cheaper brand like Purina. Which saves you money in the long run on litter.

Purina, Whiskas, Nutriscience and other run of the mill brnads all have filler and by-products in them. On the brands I just mentioned has a content of ash in the food. Not good.

Iams will make your cat live long and healthy.

I recently started giving my cat dry food by a brand called "Advance Pet Foods" (update - research shows that the brand is Australian http://www.advancepetfood.com.au/products/?product=16, but if I can get that food in Bulgaria, it should be available around Europe, IMHO), which is again made with meat as first ingredient, and for the couple of weeks since my cat has lost a bit of weight (he was not fat, but now he looks leaner), is very active and playful, and seems to love the food. Though from what I read, it's better still to get good (really good) canned food, instead of crunchie food, which is heavily processed. If price is not an issue, it seems that would be my advice - find a brand of food that has a lot of meat, and not byproducts, and almost no carbohydrates (or plant protein for that matter), and feed your cat that. Best way for your cat to stay fit and healthy, it seems from recent research / analysis.

My cousin is also my vet and he recommends either IAMS or Science Diet. I have been using IAMS for 3 years now. Both my cats like it and they have NEVER, yes I said NEVER had a hairball. This is because of the IAMS cat food. It has an ingredient that "bonds" to the hair and it is expelled from the body the "right" way!!! He also says that any cat food is OK as long as it does not contain "ASH". Look at the ingredient list. I hope this info helps you!

I like Royal Canin (formerly Waltham) because they have a lot of different varieties to specifically suit your cats needs. Everything from kitten to Maine **** to regular to senior high calorie to senior low calorie, etc. http://www.royalcanin.us/

I also like Nutro (aka Natural Care). http://www.nutroproducts.com/cat.asp

There are many available that are great that I have not tried yet. Be careful with Iams. I have heard they recently lowered quality and are now mass market food in grocery stores. Science Diet has some excellent options, but can be too rich or too high in allergens for some cats. Feline Trainer has some great comments, but those foods can be harder to find sometimes. You can order food online, but try looking at your local pet supply store.

I see that many people are recommending IAMS, but I just wanted to let you know that Iams gives my kitties indigestion. I feed them purina pro plan and that seems good, but I have been considering organic cat food such as that found at www.naturapet.com. Pro plan makes the cats happy and shiny, though :)
