There are two or three kinds of Catholics, and over 3,000 different kinds of Protestants. Catholicism dates back almost 2000 years, Protestantism was invented about 500 years ago by some folks who wanted to be Christian but didn't want to follow the church's teachings at that time.

They can't all be right, obviously, there are too many contradictions in their beliefs. I think it's at least possible if not probable that they are all wrong. If there is a God, and if there is or was a Christ, I'm quite sure they are both shaking their heads in disbelief!

Protestants broke away from the Catholics about 500 years ago. Their emphasis is supposed to be on faith alone and the Bible alone; however, many of them don't study the Bible either. Protestants have less sacraments, and they pray straight to God - they don't have the Saints as go-betweens. Catholics have transubstantiation, and different Protestant groups have different beliefs about communion. Some believe in the infinite surrounds the finite, and some just see the act as a symbolic reenactment.

The oldest denomination is called Baptists (used to be Ana-Baptists). Shortly afte rthe Catholic Church also started. Other Protestant religions starting breaking off of the Catholic Church when they disagreed with the Catholic teachings which are not biblically based.

But to be a Christian you don't need a religion. And you don't read the Bible and then "bang" you're a christian.

Here is how the Bible tells us to be a Christian.

1) Admit you are a sinner. The Bible tells us that all have sinned and no one is righteous. God is so holy that he can't stand the sight of sin. Have you ever lied, taken a pencil that wasn't yours,. talked back to your parents? Then you have sinned and are disqualified from Heaven. You get to be eternally separated from God and get to go to Hell. however...

2) Believe in Jesus Christ as your Savior. Believe in Him as the Son of God. He is God who took on man and came here to preach about Him being The Way The Truth and The Life. No one comes to the Father but by Him. Believe he died on a cross and rose again to save people from their Sin. He was the sacrifcial lamb.

3) Call upon Him. Ask Jesus to save from and accept Him his free gift of Heaven.

That's the "ABC's" of becoming a Christian. Then find a Bible preaching Church. The Catholics are not one. I personally go to a Baptist Church. They preach frm the Bible as their sole source.

God Bless

Here is the difference:

The Roman Catholic view of salvation is that God saves man through faith in Jesus Christ, a faith that is worked out in things like Baptism, Mass, and Confession. Basically, one must do these things and other things like them to be saved. More, if one sins, one can work the sins off here and go to heaven with a clean slate. The Roman Catholic Church also believes in universalism, which, briefly stated, means that a person can be a good (Muslim, Buddhist, Krishna, whatever) and still go to heaven because he was serving God the best way he knew.

The Protestant view of salvation is that God saves man through faith alone in Christ alone, to the glory of God alone. This means that one believes in Jesus and one is saved. The Protestant view also says that one demonstrates his salvation by producing works like Baptism and Communion, but that these works do not save a man. More, sins can't be worked off; either Jesus bears the man's sins, or the man bears them himself. Protestants are also extremely narrow on who can be saved, based on what Jesus said about being the only way into heaven; if He is, then, logically, all other bets are off.

Of the two, I find Protestantism to be far more consistent and compatible with Scripture than Catholicism, and, if you really want to become a Christian, get a Bible and read the Gospel of John. See what Jesus Himself says about what a man must do to be saved. See what it is you're looking into...and then put your faith and trust in Christ alone.

I hope this helped.

Protestants finally broke away from the Catholic church because of the document "The Council of Trent" formed in 1544.

This document, written and agreed upon by the Catholic church, "anathema's".. or damns those that don't hold to their understanding of scripture.

Unforunately, the Catholic view was unbiblical...and, because they have not repented or changed their views on this document, they still are.

Catholics: salvation is by works. By our works, one can make up for a sin committed. By works one achieve blessings from God. By works, one can achieve salvation.

Catholics: Mary, along with other saints that have died, are worthy to pray to. They listen to our prayers and they will pray for us and send our prayers to God the Father.

Protestants: Salvation is by grace alone. Works will follow salvation. Works do not keep a person in "good standing" with God, but are an out pouring of love from the one saved.

Protestants: There is only one Mediator...that is Jesus Christ himself. We are to pray to God the Father and the Holy Spirit is the relayer. We pray in Christ's name.

Catholicism and Protestism (nowadays) are just man made religions based upon the Bible. If you're interested in CHristianity then start reading the Bible because that is God's word to man.

If you choose a church choose one that believes the bible as their sole source for teaching.

I am protestant. We believe that Jesus is both Son of God and God. But we don't pray to Mary, confess to a priest, or believe in purgatory. We also believe in angels and demons. Prayer needs to be made to God, in the name of Jesus, and once a person dies, that is it. They either will go to Heaven or Hell, no in between.
