In terms of security, stability wise, Windows XP is the best for all these 4 operating system and it eats lot of memory due to new features that cant compare with other windows version. So if you will ask me, I prefer to use windows xp.

The differences between NT, 2000, and XP are relatively small, as they're all based on the NT architecture. Among these, NT is pretty old and probably not worth your time. 2000 and XP are more useful, with XP obviously being the newest and thus having the most features and the most memory usage.
Windows 98 uses a completely different architecture, so it's much more similar to Windows 95 and Windows ME than it is to NT, 2000, and XP. Windows 98 has a much simpler memory model where processes are not protected from each other as well. This means it requires less memory, but it also means that a bad app can have a more damaging effect on overall system stability. Windows 98 is also no longer supported by Microsoft so you risky OS to run nowadays. I'd recommend that folks on Windows 98 upgrade to a newer Windows or to Linux.

Windows 98 is based on the old MS-DOS kernel, as are Windows 95 and Windows Me.
Windows NT 4, Windows 2000 and Windows XP are evolutions of the Windows NT line of OSs. Specifically, Windows 2000 = Windows NT 5.0, Windows XP = Windows NT 5.1, the upcoming Windows Vista = Windows NT 6.0
The NT kernel is much more stable than the DOS kernel has ever been. The memory usage is higher though, alas, with today's PCs that's basically a non-issue. Furthermore, the DOS kernel only ran on x86-based hardware, whereas the NT kernel is portable: Windows NT 4 for example ran on x86, DEC Alpha, MIPS and PowerPC. XP and later run on x86, x86-64 (also known as AMD64) and the Intel Itanium architecture.

They're all the same, except that Windows XP has a big, blue, memory-hogging GUI and takes up many gigabytes more space.
