I have recently been told my 2yr old boxer has a congenital heart murmur vet has gaven her beta blockers to slow down her heart as it is having to work to hard. Her heart is enlarged and has already suffered damage to the muscles.Told her life would be considerably shortened has anybody else had a similar experience and is there any hope she could still lead a long life.

What grade is the murmur? They rate them from 1-6 (6 being the worst).

My 5 year old cocker spaniel has a grade 2 and she is fine so far. They can live a very long time with a murmur. Sometimes they just cannot do as much but they really can live a long time and be happy and feel good.

My 6mo Bichon has 2 years due to a severe (as bad as they get) heart murmur. The heart surgery would cost up to $3,000.00. She could very easily die on the table. I have opted to give her the best life I can while she is here. I spoil her rotten. She is happy, and due to the murmur she is not active at all so I keep watch and give her all the love that I can.

its unfortunate, but boxers are prone to heart problems, as well as cancer. we've alwasy had boxers, and most died due to heart problems. it really is a shame, because they are just wonderful dogs. the best thing you can do is follow what your vet says, and dont allow the dog to overdo herself. just give her all the love and care she needs.

I have a friend that has had several boxers. He loves the breed, but due to bad breeding, this is one of the defects of this breed. He has lost several with the same condition. Just do as your vet advises. Do not over exert her.
