Much longer than it is wide, most of the land of Italy forms a peninsula that resembles the shape of a boot. The “heel” is in the region of Apulia, while the “toe,” in the region of Calabria, points toward the island of Sicily.

The shape is due to the natural shifting of tectonic plates that occured over thousands of years as Italy moved away from the African continent.
