It wouldn't kill you to go out with the guy. You're mother could be wrong in which case you don't have to see him again. Go for it!

It is definitely alright to check the guy out since he comes highly recommended by your own mother, who should know you best, right? You can start with a get-to-know-each-other chaperoned date. Just make sure that your sessions go slow, not hot and heavy. Take your time to get to know him better and then decide from there if he's the one. If he is not suitable, there is no harm in having one more friend. Whatever you do, do not jump into bed with him immediately!
Now go out there and have a good date!

A date couldn't hurt but mom usually picks someone she likes not exactly what you may be into. Go out on a date and see for yourself, nothing else it is a free time out.

That is crazy if I wasn't with my boyfriend there is no way I would let my mom hook me up with anybody!!!! But then again just give him a chance to see if you like him, and just to show your mom some thanks for looking out for you.
