Are giant black dogs considered bad omens?

I've seen a huge dog/wolf animal thing, it looks about waist high and a bit like a wolf, and it's tried to attack me before, and it's black, and I was wondering if this is an omen or something, because my friend said it is.
It looks very shaggy from closer up, and smooth from farther,
It's about up to my waist high, which is like, 2.5/3 ft.
And it's pitch black, we barely saw it the first time,
And it's eyes were red, but I'm sure that was the glare of the flash light... right?
My friend said they were bad, very bad, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me more about them?

People, please, I'm really concerned and trying to be serious. I've seen this dog in two places, west salem and cleveland, I live in one and visit the other.
Tell me how a regular dog can get over 60 miles apart in one day, let alone single me out of the thousands of people who live here.
