Panasonic Lumix dmc-TZ1 for about $300. It has a 10x optical zoom with Image Stabilization and takes great pictures. I am extremely satisfied with mine.
The Kodak V610 is much smaller than the Panasonic and also 10x zoom but with no Image Stabilization.
Before you buy you should check the buying guides and reviews of a couple web sites to check out features important to you.
A good web site to do this search is www.dpreview.com. Click on their Buying Guide tab and then select Features Search. Then go to a store and experiment a little with your selections.
This is how I decided on my purchase of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1 which I think is an great compact zoom camera for the money.
Good luck.
