I've wondered this same thing myself. When someone wears deodorant, but it wears off, you can still *sort of* smell it on them. At least, maybe thier sweat isn't nearly as strong? Anyway, I think they just don't wear it, period. This isn't to say ALL Indians are like this--but the vast majority of the ones I've seen (smelled!) are.

I think a lot of it has to do with what they eat. Certain foods make your sweat smell differently. If you eat mainly spicy/flavorful food (i.e. curry) then your b.o. will smell stronger.

I was on the train last night on my way home and a man stood up and walked to the door waiting to get off on the next stop. The train lurched a little, and he raised his arm to hold on to the bar, and I thought I would die. I really wanted to ask him to please put his arm down because I was going to vomit, but I didn't have the heart to. Plus, he was getting off soon, so I just breathed through my mouth.

That's an interesting question, and even after being involved with E. Indian people I still can't answer the question in a general sense.

I had a roommate in college who was E. Indian and in one year of living together I NEVER saw him take a shower. He did have a sponge that he used to take into the bathroom for 20 mins or so, so I assume he took sponge baths or at least cleaned his privates there. And no, he didn't stink or smell of curry.

Then I had a boyfriend who was E. Indian, but he used to shower every day before going to work and before going to bed and he didn't smell of anything. I have met some E. Indians who smell like curry/spices, but those are generally the ones that just migrated so they haven't changed habits yet.

It has alot more to do with what they eat rather than their hygiene habits. This because of the spices used in their cuisine, especially the curry, it comes out through your pores for days if you eat enough of it on a regular basis.
