I am wondering if they are invasive, do they touch you, do you have to lift up your shirt, etc? Any details would help!

You fill out a form first with your name, address, etc. and who you're requesting to visit. Then you put your purse and anything else you brought along EXCEPT FOR YOUR VALID PHOTO ID into a little locker that only accepts quarters (here in CA). When your name is called, you give them your ID card and show the locker key, and they lightly touch your pockets to make sure you aren't carrying anything else. It's not invasive at all. That's at LA County Jail I've visited at.

In most cases, the search is not invasive.
However, in a FEDERAL correction facility, if there is extreme danger of drug trafficking and/or suicide risk, you will be asked to strip and a female correction officer will do an invasive search.

This may include:

Searching your vagina with a flashlight and a spatula as well as her rubber gloved finger.
You may be forced to do an anal examination to check for drugs.

A female officer may also fondle your breasts/bra to check for contraband. This is because their have been cases of females sneeking in drugs under the bra. However, there have also been cases on females sneeking in drugs inside FALSE POCKETS in their breasts - a breast implant designed with a hide pocket which first saw use sneeking cocaine into America from Clumbia. The boarder agents THOUGHT they were looking at big natural breasts, but it turned out those D-cups were hollowed out and the woman was actually carrying several Kilograms of Crack Cocaine.

Ye you have to lift your shirt. You may also be asked to take off your shoes and walk in a straight line with your hands above your head. This is a procedure designed to make loose objects drop from your body.

Make sure not too have extranneous metal objects such as nailfiles or keychains.

I live in Ohio and they don't search you before you visit at a correctional facility. You do have to clear through a metal detector and not carry any thing in with you. They have lockers for your keys and stuff.
