Samhain, the New Year. A time to put away old things and pick up new. (In my home coven, we burn a piece of paper with a bad habit or unfortunate circumstance we wanted to leave behind, then speak a positive goal for the new year.) A day of connection to the dead, and to celebrate those who had gone in the year before. (We make cupcakes with dark chocolate frosting and write our departed ones' names on them in purple and orange icing--the kids knew not to touch! That was an offering!) I moved away, but I go home to Orlando for Samhain. It's a very special time.

It's a harvest festival, the time to put the cattle in the winter field. They are supposed to be driven between two bonfires to 'purify' them. A Fire blessing of some sort, I guess. Maybe it helps burn fleas or something. There is plenty to eat at this time of year and it's the Celtic New Year. It's supposed to be a time of Thin Veil, when the barrier between the Worlds is thinner. I, personally, like when the air gets a refreshing chill in it. I'm more into Germanic, not Celtic, so that's about all I've learned about Samhain. It might be a Festival of Lights, like Yule is later on.

For those who follow the pagan path it is like new years eve. It is the beginning of the pagan year and it is also a day when spirits have an opportunity to pass through their dimension into ours. It is also known as all souls day. It is a time to reflect the past year and an excellent time for a ritual of transformation. The best part is the partaking of cakes and ales. Ase, Ase

Halloween for Wiccans is Samhain... The new year of the Religion. It is the day were dark and death triumphs over the horned God who would be sooner be conceived by the mother and be reborn to start the new cycle and that's another sabbath...

In our home, Samhain is a time of enjoying the harvest, honoring our ancestors, and is the end/beginning of our half-year. It is also a time for introspection and divination.
