Usually a gesture, like taking them to lunch or dinner is more appropriate rather than buying a gift (so there is one less thing to move when you help them!).

while they are moving provide them with lots to drink. at least water, but lemonade is a nice touch. most people will appreciate a coffee too. after they are done you should provide them with beer, and more than $5 dollars worth or they will think you're a cheapie. buying them a case of beer is still less expensive than hiring moving guys.

I don't know what under $5 can buy since I don't live in the US but if they are many you can invite them for a brunch or something on Sunday. They might appreciate it.

Have them over for pizza and beer, always works when I've moved.
It's not expensive (when you figure out the actual cost per person, anyway), and it's a good bonding experience. Soda could be subsituted for beer, too.

Depends on what they would like, a home-cooked meal, bake a cake, babysit for them, a six-pack or bottle of wine? Use a skill or talent you have. If these people are all friends, invite them over for a little party.

Throw a "thank you" party! Really. That's what my friends and I do when we move.
We give each other little 'thank you' parties. Pizza and beer, a massage gift certificate, potted plants or flowers, gas gift card...just a few ideas.

When I move and my friends help, I order a few pizza's and buy a couple cases of beer. It works, no is ever busy when I move, so I must do something right.

If they like coffee, why not a gift certificate for Starbucks? If you can afford a little more, then maybe a gift certificate to a small bistro or restaurant. That's what I did.

Wasn't their help worth more than $5.00? Have them over for beer and pizza. Or coffee and doughnets.

I always have them over for dinner and a movie once things are all settled down. No one has ever complained with that and a simple thank you.
