I once knew a Great Dane that was fed every day but suddenly suffered a dramitic weight loss but when the stool was looked at( not by a vet but by the owner) there was no evidence of worms.

I forgot to mention that after two weeks of increasing the food, the Dane regained the lost weight and looked healthier.

Yes, a well fed dog can still lose a lot of weight in a short time, but normally their appetite will taper if they sick enough to lose weight like that.

On worms - some Parasitology 101: since there seems to be confusion about diagnostics... In fecal exams, the appearance of worms isn't how the worm test is done. Generally small sections of the poop are mashed with a liquid that will cause the ova/eggs of the worms to float to the top of the mashy liquid. Some of this liquid is examined in a microscope. Different species of worms make eggs that are a unique shape for their species and that's what the technician or parasitologist looks for. Also the fecal exam allows checking for other organisms like giardia and coccidiosis. Worms do not always dislodge into the poop, but can they produce enormous amounts of ova scattered into the poop, which can only be seen with a microscope (not even a magnifying glass). If it is tapeworm, then tape sections/proglottids, which look sort of like rice granules may actually be visible on the surface of fresh poop.

Okay, nuff on the icky intestinal worms.

Very likely intestinal worms were not the principle cause of the Dane's rapid deterioration. But heartworms can cause create serious problems and rapid deterioration and death.

There are other systemic issues that can lead to gaunt dogs, like hyperthyroid, some cancers and other such things. If the dog survived a case of bloat, there may be so much damage internally that the dog never fully recovers.

Danes in general are not a long lived breed unfortunately. :(

there's a homeopathic tissue salt called Ferrum phosphate which I even have from my vet for vomiting (and different issues). Get a 30C performance in case you could. call well being food shops first to locate if all and sundry includes it. yet another selection may be Nux vomica at 6X performance (in spite of the undeniable fact that 30C heavily isn't volatile if it rather is all that's obtainable). For the Nux dissolve one pellet in a small quantity of filtered water and supply to the cat via eye dropper. supply the Nux on an empty abdomen. you additionally can feed him some toddler food - all meat without onion or garlic powder (Gerber's degree 2). chicken, turkey or lamb are the simplest on the tummy - do no longer use beef. For an occasion following vomiting dissolve the pill on the top of your finger with a drop of filtered water and in basic terms rub it gently on the cat's lips. he will lick it off. it rather is a usual-help therapy to help him over some hours. the reason for his vomiting and weight loss (comprehensible if he throws each and every thing up he's no longer getting any nourishment) could be investigated via the vet. try this first ingredient next week.

Yes, there are other reasons besides worms, but it would take a vet to figure out the problem.
Just to name a couple of examples (not that these are right, a vet should be seen) cancer or poisoning could definitly cause dramatic weight loss. So could depression, if something changed and no one noticed.

By the time worms are seen, they have done a lot of damage..
if he hasn't been wormed lately, it could very well be worms..However, as Great Danes are plagued with genetic and geriatric problems, he should really be given an exam by a vet.
