Oo believe me, I was so nervous when I was getting my oral surgery. It was exactly a week ago. I was TERRIFIED of getting put to sleep. All they do is;

1. The nurse will come in & she will most likely explain everything they are doing to you.

2. She will maybe give you 'happy gas', which makes you relaxed. You might feel a little lightheaded and strange, and your fingers might feel tingly. It will be a mask on your nose, and you will have to breathe in and out. You might start laughing out of nowhere.

3. She will place monitors on you, one on your left finger, which is an oxygen monitor. Then she will place other monitors.

4. The doctor will come in, and show you where he/she is going to place the IV in. The nurse will most likely grab your hand and tell you to clench it.

5. You will feel a slight pinch, and suddenly out of breath. But in a matter of two seconds, you're passed out.

6. You wake up feeling groggy, not knowing what is going on, until you feel a big lump of gauze in your mouth.

7. Then you just follow instructions. : )

Oh, and believe me, it's not as painful as they say it will be. : )

The best way I've found to deal with having an IV needle put in is not to watch. I ask the person sticking me to warn me just before he/she does it, but it seems to hurt a lot less when I'm not looking. I tell myself that it's only going to hurt for a second (which is true).

If you're really scared you could ask the oral surgeon to prescribe an anti-anxiety medicine (such as Valium) for you to take an hour or so beforehand.

Good luck!

Hope this helps.

So what's your question? The IV, if adminstered properly is painless. Look away from the arm you are having the IV put in....no big deal. You'll be experiencing a lot more discomfort from the teeth getting pulled. Ensure you gargle salt water (and later diluted hydrogen peroxide, one cap full to 1/2 cup water). regularly and it is probably suggested that you start on a general antibiotic as there is a lot opportunity for infection.

Its not that bad dear. My oral surgeon sprayed my arm with a freezing spray that numbed the area before the stuck me with the needle, I didn't feel a thing. Anyways, I think the needle is probably the least of your worries, just don't watch.

when they put the needle in your arm to start the IV....breathe out (exhale)....the ***** is only a moment. Also, know that the part that is remaining in your arm is only a thin piece of plastic. The actual needle catheter is removed! Most people think that the needle itself remains in the arm.....this is not true. It is only a piece of thin plastic....you will be fine...
