ok well i am deaf and when i am in class i always rely on the interpreter fully and don't use my voice. but i was raised orally so i can talk and i talk & communicate by lipreading at my job and with the few people i am friends with that do not know sign. if someone from my class were to run into me at work or out in public and see me speaking, would they get the wrong idea? i guess when i am in class with the interpreter, i just like to rely on her/him as to get a break from having to lipread and talk. why do i feel like such a fake sometimes then?

You shouldn't feel like a fake! The school provides you with an interpreter to make your life easier. If it helps you in school to get a break from lipreading and such you shouldn't worry about what people will think. Although most people probably don't realize you can speak, they would probably be impressed that you are able to communicate in so many ways. I know I am. You can speak, lip-read, and sign. That's a lot more than most people can do. Do what makes you happy and use the interpreter to your advantage. People who aren't used to seeing you talk may be surprised but most likely won't have a negative reaction from seeing you do it. And if someone does, they are just immature. So hope that for their sake, they grow up one day. Its your life, live it your way!!! : )

It shouldn't matter to other people if you use the interpreter or not, if you feel you have to rely on them because its easier and gives you a break from lipreading/talking all the time then thats your business. Who are they to judge? I'm sure most of them don't know what its like to have a disability anyway.

Everyone should understand. I know that I would! As for that break I think that everyone needs one sometimes. You are not a fake don't think that way about it. Your classmates should understand and if you have to tell them it is ok also sometimes people just need some help. As for that interpreter that is in your classroom that is great that might teach them how to sign. I wish that I would have had the chance to learn how to sign somethings I have to take a class on it now. Good Luck with school and keep you head up!!!!!

Yes they might get the wrong idea. Maybe you could talk some in class so they know that you can lip-read and talk. They will think better of you if they know you are in charge of your situation in life. Having the interpreter is essential in class I think so that you don’t miss any comments form people that you may not be looking directly at but why rely on him/her to talk for you too unless your speech is hard for others to understand as can be the case with the deaf.

People will always get the wrong idea... I think that's a law of some kind, isn't it.

I've been losing my hearing over the past ten years - behind the ear devices are working for me but may not do it forever. I lip read, too, and I know what you mean about taking a break from it... gee whiz. Pulling my aides out of my ears and just dropping out is sometimes like being in a dream world... I love the silence of it.

But... wrong idea?... yeah, probably. Don't worry about it. Make one friend, or even just an acquaintance, try getting on with one of the teachers for example, and after they see you at it a time or two, your school mates will begin to know what a struggle it can be. Some will understand, some will be ******* - their problem and not yours.

If anyone says anything just say the classroom is one place and the "real world" is another. You can speak, but prefer not to in class as you are afraid to create a distraction or to be misunderstood by the "teacher". Not the students since they are possible friends or class mates. I don't think they would think one way or another. You have an advantage to make friends cause you are your own person and not like others because of your hearing lose. Some people maybe afraid to approach you cause they are not sure how to communicate with you. As I said they could be possible friends?

There is nothing wrong with that! Anything that can make your life easier is not wrong. If people do not understand that then they need a swift kick in the rear! And do not feel like a fake, like i said, there is nothing wrong with using an interpreter at school, or anywhere else in that case, so do not worry about it and just do what you can to make this crazy thing called life go by a little smother.

No they shouldn't get the wrong idea. Having an interpreter ensures that you get ALL the information in the lesson. It would be quite possible for you to miss some if the teacher happen to turn back to the chalk board. Continue what you are doing.

You shouldn't feel like a fake. Don't worry about others. If they can not accept the fact that you are deaf, then they just might be missing a great chance to learn something new and make a great friend. Be yourself, be proud of who you are and what you are doing. don't worry about others!!!

Be you... don't feel pressured to talk and don't worry about what people think about you. You wouldn't lie about being deaf... You have a gift of lipreading that many people don't have. don't hide it, use it... and if you see your fellow classmates yell out "Hello!"
