Aside from fighting heart disease, cancer, and other diseases, a new study shows that drinking green tea may also fight fat.
The study showed that people who drank a bottle of tea fortified with green tea extract every day for three months lost more body fat than those who drank a bottle of regular oolong tea.
Researchers say the results indicate that substances found in green tea known as catechins may trigger weight loss by stimulating the body to burn calories and decreasing body fat.
The findings appear in the January issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Green Tea: Fat Fighter?
Black tea, oolong tea, and green tea come from the same Camellia sinensis plant. But unlike the other two varieties, green tea leaves are not fermented before steaming and drying.
Most teas contain large amounts of polyphenols, which are plant-based substances that have been shown to have antioxidant, anticancer, and antiviral properties.
However, green tea is particularly rich in a type of polyphenols called catechins. These substances have also been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties, but recent research in animals show that catechins may also affect body fat accumulation and cholesterol levels.
In this study, researchers looked at the effects of catechins on body fat reduction and weight loss in a group of 35 Japanese men. The men had similar weights based on their BMIBMI (body mass index, an indicator of body fat) and waist sizes.
The men were divided into two groups. For three months, the first group drank a bottle of oolong tea fortified with green tea extract containing 690 milligrams of catechins, and the other group drank a bottle of oolong tea with 22 milligrams of catechins.
During this time, the men ate identical breakfasts and dinners and were instructed to control their calorie and fat intake at all times so that overall total diets were similar.
After three months, the study showed that the men who drank the green tea extract lost more weight (5.3 pounds vs. 2.9 pounds) and experienced a significantly greater decrease in BMI, waist size, and total body fat.
In addition, LDL "bad" cholesterol went down in the men who drank the green tea extract.
The catechin content varies by amount of green tea used and steeping time. But general recommendations, based on previous studies on the benefits of green tea, are at least 4 cups a day. Green tea extract supplements are also available.
Researchers say the results indicate that catechins in green tea not only help burn calories and lower LDL cholesterol but may also be able to mildly reduce body fat.
"These results suggest that catechins contribute to the prevention of and improvement in various lifestyle-related diseases, particularly obesity," write researcher Tomonori Nagao of Health Care Products Research Laboratories in Tokyo, and colleagues.

Green tea contains more caffeine than regular coffee and as others have already pointed out, its the caffeine which helps you burn calories by either revving up your metabolism or just giving you the energy to be more active (and burn calories that way).
However a lot of green teas that are sold specifically for "slimming" or "dieting" also contain herbal laxatives which can be really harsh on your system.
Your best bet is to drink regular green tea, unsweetened, as part of an overall diet and exercise program.

If you want to loose weight, there are better ways. I think what you heard is there is a property of the Green leaf that is substantial amounts can aid weight loss. In this case, buy a green tea/leaf supplement. To get the same result, you'd have to drink at least 14 cups of green tea a day which I don't think you'd want to:)

If you look at the ingredients list for any fat burning supplement, chances are that green tea will be on there.tea-plant
This is because green tea has been shown to increase fat burning and boost the metabolic rate, in human controlled trials.
In one study in 10 healthy men, green tea increased energy expenditure by 4%.
Another study showed that fat oxidation was increased by 17%, indicating that green tea may selectively increase the burning of fat.
However, I’d like to point out that some studies on green tea don’t show any increase in metabolism, so the effects may depend on the individual.
Caffeine itself has also been shown to improve physical performance by mobilizing fatty acids from the fat tissues and making them available for use as energy.
In two separate review studies, caffeine has been shown to increase physical performance by 11-12%, on average.

green tea has been used as a medicine in China for at least 4,000 years.
Today, scientific research in both Asia and the west is providing hard evidence for the health benefits long associated with drinking green tea. For example, in 1994 the Journal of the National Cancer Institute published the results of an epidemiological study indicating that drinking green tea reduced the risk of esophageal cancer in Chinese men and women by nearly sixty percent. ^_^

In my books you're a gentle drinker .. I consume about 12 cups of various teas (most of the ones you mention) per day and don't appear to have any ill effects, as yet .. and I've been doing it for about 30 years .. beware though, of adding sweeteners or sugar

People who plan their weekly meals tend to be more successful at losing weight than those that don’t. Plan your dishes to feature healthy carbs such as lovely potato and wholegrain pasta, green vegetables and lean proteins, buy every one of the ingredients in advance and don’t be tempted to enjoy out or order in.

Suck the idea in. Consciously hold in and contract your abdominals while you’re walking, sitting for your desk or making the dinner. This will help to strengthen your abdominals and your core, and create for you one step closer to any flatter stomach.

It can help clean the toxins from your system, in turn making your system work better. All in all, your body can burn more calories because it works more efficiently. I recommend taking green tea pills with your daily vitamins.....not the diet pills....just the herb itself.
