The understanding of virginity in the minds of the ancient Christians is very clear so the usage of the title and various words to describe Mary's virginity is also very clear in its meaning.
The traditional understanding runs along the lines of as Christ exited the closed tomb (and also later entered the closed upper room), so too did He exit the closed womb of Mary at His birth.
