My mom is bi-polar and her doctor told us that it means her body doesn't produce a chemical that it needs to be mentally stable. So in effect the medicine is all you need to be "normal". But most people that I have know that are bi-polar have had really strong emotions and strong mood swings and have done things they don't remember or wish they didn't remember. That's why counseling is still needed. Also counseling will help you to cope with your "illness" and learn how to act in life now that you won't be acting the same way you always have. It can be a very hard adjustment.
