70% alcohol causes the cell walls of the bacteria to break down more effectively than 90% alcohol does; breakdown of the cell walls is what kills them.

5% ethyl alcohol is a bactericide and viricede. 10% more effective. Why 70 ,80, 95%? Ethyl alcohol is an irritant. So lesser % the better.
