Is the lump up higher on the gum tissue? If the lump is higher on the tissue and looks kinda like a pimple, it is an abscess. An abscess will drain at thinest part of the tooth, which is the root tip. As long as it is draining, it usually doesn't hurt. When it stops draining pressure will build up and the tooth will hurt. The tooth with need root canal therapy. Just taking antibiotics will clear the infection only temporary. There is a canal that runs through the middle of your tooth. That is where the blood flows thus keeping the tooth alive. If for any reason that canal is exposed to bactria, it will not heal. You will continue to have reoccuring abscesses. And if the tooth is cracked, you will also need a crown. Cracks in your teeth cannot just be sealed like a cement sidewalk. With the continue biting pressure the "seal" will microscopically leak. A crown is like putting bands around a barrell. It keeps the crack from getting larger. Be careful not to break the tooth...Avoid hard crunches like ice, pop corn, candies.

If the lump is real close to where the tooth and gum meet. It is most likely gum irritation. There is a pocket of gum that overlaps the tooth. (kinda how your fingernail overlaps the finger) If that area is not kept clean your gums will get swollen and inflamed.....Leading to bone loss. That is how gum disease works. Needless of either problem you do need to see the dentist. And I gotta tell you, if the tooth has a crack....it's more than likely abscessed. Don't put it off! See your dentist. You don't want to get into more trouble.

the lump may be caused by a build up of bacteria in your gum which is caused by an infection. it's not uncommon to get an infection if you have a crack in your tooth. you should go to the dentist and you'll probably get a prescription for an antibiotic to kill the infection.

then, i'm sure the dentist will recommend that you seal the crack in the tooth so the chances of that infection coming back get reduced.

I guess "did not go to dentist"? Probably infection getting in the gum around the tooth. Don't screw with the gums, I had periodontal disease of the gums and ignored it and within 10 years every tooth is gone. Have it checked to make sure !! ?:)x

Healthy gums are generally a nice coral pink, smooth, cover your teeth properly at the base, and don’t contain any painful lesions. Those with gum diseases bleed, have tartar, are swollen, give you an unpleasant taste in the mouth, and pain a lot.
