3 days ago my arms started feeling really sore. All I could remember doing out-of-routine was toting a case of water. But the next day they were even sorer, and my legs too - quads and calves. I feel like I competed in a triathlon! A couple days behind me my husband mysteriously feels the same way. He has had a nasal cold/sore throat for a couple weeks now, too. My throat is bugging me a little now too. This is so bizarre...could it be some sort of virus or bacterial infection? Neither of us did any new workout. We're both physically fit.

It actually sound a lot like polymyositis, but the odds of both of you having a sudden onset would be astronimical. It's an inflammatory disorder of skeletal muscle that causes muscle weakness. The disease has a moderately severe onset and generally begins in the second decade of life, rarely affecting individuals under the age of 18. The most common symptom is muscle weakness, usually affecting the muscles that are closest to the trunk of the body. Eventually, individuals have difficulty rising from a sitting position, climbing stairs, lifting objects, or reaching overhead. In some cases, muscles that are further from the trunk of the body may be affected later in the course of the disease. Individuals may have trouble swallowing which could explain the throat problems you describe. Muscles may ache and be tender to the touch. The disease may be associated with other collagen-vascular, autoimmune, or infectious disorders such as Crohn disease or myasthenia gravis. It's probably not this unless you are having sympathy pains.

In any event, an evaluation of muscle enzymes such as creatine kinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), aldolase, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) should all be done. Mysositis-specific antibodies can also be considered as part of the evaluation.

A rheumatologist or neurologist should be consulted for further discussion and evaluation of these symptoms and followup with your personal physician is essential.

Good luck

I had something similar a few years ago and someone else at my work had the same thing. I went to the doctor but he didn't really do anything except say it's probably a virus and get some rest. It went away after about 10 days.

where are you at? check the cdc website to see what outbreaks of what virus are going around your area. i do know that a bit of the stomach flu has been going around. medically called viral gastroenteritis. that definitely makes your muscles sore.

if it's not that, it could just be the common flu. you are a little early for flu season, but it's not unheard of. take it easy, and i'm sure you'll be fine in a few days.
