Your child can eat mac & cheese, bread, pudding, well I will just list some stuff that he can NOT eat.
Your child can eat an apple just not without cutting it up into little bite size pieces.
I would not recommend your child eating chicken from the bone because it will brake a bracket and will mess up the cost and time of the braces.
Do not let your child eat gummy stuff or sugar gum such as out of a blow pop. Yout child may chew sugar free gum because it will not stick to the bracket of braces.
Hope this helps any and good luck with the braces.

He really just needs to avoid corn on the cob and apples on the core -- pretty much everything else is fair game. Also, when I had braces I was told I would only be able to chew Fredent gum, but had success with the usual brands.

Haha, I wish YahoO!Answer was here when I got my braces.
I ate anything that didnt require too much chewing/or soft. This included, rice, bread, some meats, some veges.
Nothing that requires tearing. I would say let your son eat relatively chewable food and have him stop when he feels pain.

I've never had braces, but I imagine you should steer clear of any stringy foods.
The first answerer is right though you really should talk to the dentist.
