There are a lot of very good reasons to wear sunglasses in that part of the world, and its true it does make you look mean, however it is contrary to the psychology of peacekeeping.

The British army, who tend to be quite good at the hearts and minds stuff, found that many african and eastern cultures place a great deal of trust and respect in non verbal behaviour (body language) and that in order to take the heat out of potentially hpsitle situations in was nessesary to literally "look people in the eye".

A six foot five marine dressed like Robocop, carrying enough firepower to invade a small country is quite an oppresive sight, but if you can talk to him and look him in the eyes you can find the human inside the armour.

Just goes to show how much Democrats know about the military. The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan are wearing ballistic protection glasses which protect their eyes from flying fragments. Amazing, the same people probably complain body armor without knowing anything about that either...

What makes soldiers look tough and mean is last weeks newspaper pictures of fat, clean and lazy politicians talking crap.
Soldiers wear sunnies so that civilians do not freeze into ice when looked at.Just remember that not only do soldiers on active service look tough, they really are tough, lean and mean fighting machines.
It is politicians who wear sunnies to try and look tough and mean.
Of course diggers look tough without sunnies.

Trust certain Democrats to resort to that. You realize that would be the less intelligent ones, correct? If we are going to send our soldiers over to desert areas where they will be risking their lives, living in tents, dealing with sandstorms, and having to look over their shoulders every second, not only should they have sunglasses, but we should be supplying them with the best.

Our soldiers should look TOUGH and be MEAN.

If wearing sunglasses helps our troops KILL more Islamo-facists, I am all for it. Of course,I am not a Democrat or liberal-Republican.

And, you have to remember, Islamo-facists want to die, they don't care if their executioner wears sunglasses or aprons, bras or panty hose, as long as the bullet finds its mark.

Those 'sunglasses' are actually 'Ballistic Eye Protection' referred to as 'BLEPS'. They protect Soldiers from IED bomb blasts and the shrapnel from artillery. Wearing them have saved countless Soldiers' eyesight when attacked by roadside bombs or artillery. It is a required part of a Soldiers' force protection posture.
