Please, be honest with this person and do not pretend... tell him to move on... if you have any feelings for this person, be careful... especially, since this is your first relationship... there are a lot of dogs and pigs... we should cherish the men that treat us like queens

If you're going to break it off, just make sure it's nice and clear from the start and keep it that way as days go by.
I have to wonder though, are your priorities that well aligned? I never met anybody who looked back on their life and wished they had worked more and loved less. You only get a handful of opportunities in your life, make the best of them while you can, it may be a very long time before the next one comes along.
The real question might not be "How to break up." but perhaps "How to get this relationship working so that I get to keep it and achieve my goals at the same time?" If you had somebody backing you up in your goals you may find they are easier to achieve anyways, but you might need to talk that one out together first if it's ever going to happen.
Bets of luck to ya.

i have been in the same position u r in, hell ye i gota a year back wit it in coll. u havent been precise as to if u r workin or studyin. tats tells a lot. anyway since ur career comes first id say try managing both. or spill out the fact to him tell him tat its not goin so as u have in mind or planned. since its ur first relation breakin up after ten months could be hard on. but things change.
Its just ur first relation u r in. U might want to ignore the fact but when u work or enter a new group u might find new friends and new people and someday wala u never know it u r in love again .
Still everything depends upon u and the direction love takes u in. it aint the end of the world i have been in love all over again n i understand people better.

true love comes once in your life, before you break up with him for missing some goal you previously set in life, consider your feelings for him, if you care a lot for him then talk to him about your dissipointment in missing your goal and work through it.
if your feelings are not so strong, then be abrupt, like pulling off a bandaid if you drag it out and try to do it slowly it will only hurt more.

JUST BE HONEST WITH HIM AND TELL HIM THAT YOU HAVE
TO FOCUS ON YOUR GOALS THAT YOU HAVE SET FOR
YOURSELF AND IF HE TRULY CARE FOR YOU HE WILL
UNDERSTAND THAT SINCE HE SHOULD HAVE GOAL THAT
HE NEED TO REACH AS WELL.
