Here's a bit of info for you... (By the way, the timber wolf is a *sub-species* of the gray wolf.)
"10. How much do adult wolves weigh?
Adult female gray wolves in northern Minnesota weigh between 50 and 85 pounds, and adult males between 70 and 110 pounds. Gray wolves are larger in the northwestern United States, Canada, and Alaska where adult males weigh 85 to 115 pounds and occasionally reach 130 pounds.
Adult female red wolves weigh 40 to 75 pounds, while males weigh from 50 to 85 pounds.
11. How big are wolves?
The average length (tip of nose to tip of tail) of an adult female gray wolf is 4.5 to 6 feet; adult males average 5 to 6.5 feet. The average height (at the shoulder) of a gray wolf is 26 to 32 inches.
The average length (tip of nose to tip of tail) of an adult red wolf is 4.5 to 5.5 feet. The average height (at the shoulder) of an adult red wolf is about 26 inches."
Great Dane:
"Height: Dogs 30-34 inches (76-86 cm.) Bitches 28-32 inches (71-81 cm.) Weight: Dogs 120-200 pounds (54-90 kg.) Bitches 100-130 pounds (45-59 kg.)

great danes are taller
i have been followed once for 3 days ,in Jasper National park by timber wolves
in the end one came close enough to speak to
they were just curious and did not threaten me
but i got a real good look at them and the great dane is bigger but skinnier and the wolf would probably beat up a great dane.
their fur protects them.

They are actually very close in height, wolves are about 2.5 ft. and Great Danes are 34inches (almost 3 ft.) However, Danes weigh a lot more than a wolf: males averages about 75lbs, females 60lbs, whereas Great Dane are: males 120-200lbs, females 100-130lbs.

but they say a timber wolf is around 2.5 feet high and a average great dane is around the same. but there are thoes few who go above average.

Great Danes are much, much bigger. There were 'dire wolves' - but even they were smaller than great Danes, and while some may have existed into our age of the world in northern Europe or the Americas, they are all extinct now. (and officially extinct for millions of years) timber wolves are about 3'8'' at shoulder for a large male - not very big. Of course if you meet one I'm sure that's plenty big enough! Wolves have more complex social behavior and stronger crushing force in their jaws than most domestic breeds.
