The US involvement in Iraq could never really succeed because the military planners never visualised a scenario that could be defined as a success. If you look at the US invasion it was never going to be anything but an opening chapter. However, no one is realistically talking about the civil development of the country any more (unlike when the US first went in). Any plans to put power generation back on track, redevelop oil resources, provide clean water etc., are on a back burner as forces just try to keep the roads open and safe. No one is realistically talking about such things any more. Even basic safety is apparently beyond the occupying forces. All that is left is a ruined country.

The US government have to recognise that their presence there is perceived as the biggest problem (rightly or wrongly) by virtually the rest of the world. Once that happens the military will have to effect a withdrawal - and let the spin doctors worry about making it look like a victory. The term 'peace with honor' comes to mind.

In the end someone will just have to have the courage to say - enough is enough - and then start boarding planes.

I'm gonna ditto what "Bobby D" said!

It is in America's best interest to support the new Iraqi government who WANT US THERE, by the way. Even if we are involved in a war that doesn't concern us, it doesn't mean that we shouldn't be there if they want us there. That's why we have allies...to get each other's backs! And once the Iraqi government is stable, then we will have an ally in the region.

Do get your facts right. America is right where its always been, however, US military persons are in Iraq creating enough of a front that there has been no bombings in US.

Unfortunately, we are stuck there for ever. The crisis in Iraq will only get worst and our troops will continue to die slowly for many years to come. We Americans must do something before it is too late. Good Job! and Mission Accomplished Mr. President.

Well we could try cut and run as most respondents have suggested, but its doubtful that would solve any problems. Worse yet it might lead to cutting and running from everything that got tough. Maybe we should bail out of the inner cities because crime is to tough to combat. How about cutting and running from the southern states cause of the immigration problem. Its a global war on terrorism if you don't want to see it finished move to France, they have already surrendered.

Easily. Once they've run out of insurgents to kill. You people think wars last only a few months? We're there until the war is over.

When is the last time you heard the Iraqi government ask us to pack up and head home? You haven't. That's because they need us there to help them keep control of their country.

Why don't you use your head?

We have started something that will take a long time to finish. But I am sure if Bush is out of office that would help.
