Every New Years quite a few years back people on Oahu use to go COMPLETLY INSANE!! PHSYCO!! LOONY TUNES!! KOOKOO KOOKOO!! You would have never seen anything like it before, but......
crybabies starting complaining, "I can't breath (from the firework smoke)", "Boo Hoo, Mommy". So, New Years is nothing like the olden days, but judging by the other posts people still seem to be impressed by it. I recommend Oahu.

You definetly want to be on O'ahu. You especially want to be around Ala Moana Area when the fireworks display is going off at the strike of Midnite. The fireworks are lovely to see. Enjoy your stay if you do plan to go to Hawai'i for new years.
