i am borrowed a TI-86 model calculator and when i turn it on a dark screen pops up and i cant see any numbers, is there a way to change the mode of how dark the background screen is? if so let me know how.

press the 2nd button(yellow button) and then hold down the down arrow key until you see the screen.

On the TI-81 and TI-83 the color contrast was controlled by pressing the shift key and then the up or down key to change the contrast. I imagine they kept this simple command structure in the TI-86.

It was quite common after changing batteries, when you had turned up the contrast as much as it would go just prior to changing, that the screen would be all black and the contrast would have to be taken back down to almost nothing again.

I do not know if this helps you out but I got the TI-35
and if you take ti back off the calculator not the battery door I mean the back and then lift the board out and the display if it is like mine has a seperate slide of glass if you reverse that on the display it appears dark with light numbers the other way it would be light with dark numbers but be carful not to snap any wires when you snap it back together I do it all the time.
