His cockatiel flew off, and he's pretty upset about it. I want to get him a new bird, but I'm short of funds right now. What kind of bird is best for talking AND costs less than 50 dollars?

There is no such bird that talks and is less thatn $50.....unless you plan on buying a finch and hiding a tape recording of a parrot under the paper at the bottom of the cage

Honestly, go get him a Turkey Sandwich and give him $45 in cash.....he'll get over the bird (if he's that upset about this bird, what's it going to be like when you break up with him!)....you're in for the long haul.

Be sure he wants a new bird. It actually might upset him more to buy a new one. For under $50, I'd get a parakeet. They can be taught to say a few words. I would get one (get its wings clipped, the pet store should do this for you, and it will need to be done about once a month there after) and train it. Get it used to your boyfriend and comfortable with its surrondings. Don't you mess with the bird though. Parakeets especially bond only to one person and you want that person to be your boyfriend, not you. After the new bird is happy and at home, I'd get him/her a friend. Its a lonely life for a bird to be the only one.. Then train the new bird. Don't get them both at once, they won't bond to your boyfriend but rather to each other.
It doesn't really matter because parakeets usually won't mate unless housed in a large group but most people will want to know if their pet is a boy or a girl. Ask the store how old their birds are. If older than 4 months (they should be) you can tell the sex very easily. A male will have a blue/purple cere and a female will have a tan/pinkish cere. A cere is the colored section above the beak where the nostrils are located. If the birds are younger than four months it is difficult to tell the sex. You can ask the petstore, because most stores raise their own birds (even petsmart hand raises some baby birds) so they might know. A parakeet will run you about $20 and come in lots of pretty colors. I assume your boyfriend already has bird supplies, so other than the bird, all you need is stuff that is specific to parakeets. I would get PARAKEET food. Don't use the old food. Go to the link for the Petsmart Care Sheet for parakeets.

**Parakeets need a gravel type material to digest their food. I assume some food types come with this mixed in. Ask the petstore for more info.

A cockatiel basically. You could get lucky though..just ask around at pet stores and some people put fliers up or put adds in the paper. And if you do get another one...make sure it's a male.

Why did it fly off to begin with? Accidentally flew out the door, or was he an irresponsible bird owner to begin with?

Don't get him a new bird. Pets are something you really should buy on your own, what if you too break up and he looks at that bird everyday and wants to kill it? yea feel free to join him when he gets his new bird but don't get it for him.

don't be too rush about it talk to some of his relatives like his father or mother or he always talk to.
then get a little deeper and get some info if he wants another bird or not cause you know some (ex) pet owners have trauma about it and dosen't want a new pet

First of all, ask your boyfriend if he would like another bird, then go from there.

If my girlfriend ever bought me a bird she would quickly become my ex-girlfriend.

Hmmmm. for your price range I would say get him a rare parakeet from petsmart. they cost roughly 30$ and he will love it.

A parakeet is a good choice. But if you are a redneck get him a game rooster.
