never blame yourself for your dad's meanness and don't become him either. i was lucky to have great parents, but i was always closer to my dad because i only saw him on the weekends, and he always made sure we had fun, when you are apart from someone you love it makes the time you do get to share even more special. but my mom was aslo great to because she raised us all and never resented any of us for holding her back. she had to be the bad guy alot and i never realized until i had children of my own what she meant when said i am only trying to do what is best for you, or you will thanking me someday for being a meanie. i always said i would never be like her but i constantly hear myself using expressions she said to me as a child.

No. I want to be as far away from my parents as I can possibly get! But seriously, sometimes the people who are supposed to nurture us are the people who hurt us the most. It is a sad fact of life. But don't let their problems become your problem. They had issues before you were ever born and they didn't do anything about them. You can learn from their mistakes and be a better person. I know I did. It wasn't always easy but I did it. I wish you all the best. I really do.

I have a dad who I love but has some emotional problems and he can be very draining. My mother is narcissistic and has never met her granddaughter. As long as my mom stay the way she is, she will never know my angel.

too late for me but i tried with my mom. thing is, she just wanted the same 'distance' that she always kept and to look down on her kids as inferiors!
i would have loved to be closer to my parents but they wouldn't allow it. they kept there superior, hostile distance and delt with us as unworthy, unloveable, inferiors that would never attain the equal status of their adult 'friends'.
in an effort to become equal to my parents, i began respectfully calling my mother by her FIRST NAME (not a 'mommy label') - just like she addressed me by my FIRST NAME! would have done that with my fearful, threatening dad but he was dead by the time i got the nerve.
they never would have let their inferior children be 'close' to them........oh well............
