My dog, 1/2 shelti/1/2 lab is less than a year old, about 60 pounds, and a digging maniac. He digs around the fence, the house, the deck, and around trees. We rub his nose in it, hit him, put him in his kennel...nothing is helping. Not quite sure what to do, but about to give him away. My son will be heartbroken, but I'm not quite sure what else to do. Any advice??

Also, I've done the poop thing, filling it in the holes he has dug, and it's worked. But he just finds a new spot!
I just keep thinking that he'll outgrow it, like some have said. My yard is going to pay for this!!! :)

I understand your problems......... If I was you, I'll try to give my dog discipline. And also try to spend more time with him and teach him trick and even play with him too.

There are some website you should check them out. They can help you figure out what to do to stop your dog from digging.

Whenever you had a pet, Please don't give up on them... Since the first day you take them home, they are already part of you family member. Don't give up on them that easy... Use more heart to take care of them, just like the way you take care your son.......... "Is the way how I love my pets, and I hope everyone should do the same!!"

I also have had problems with "diggers" in the past. Best thing to do is get a concrete pad poured around the kennel where you keep him and then your fence on top of that. If all else fails you could get his claws removed, like that which is done for an inside cat. Then again, it's just in some dogs nature to do those types of things, especially Labs. I've had plenty of them and they all were "diggers".

First all dogs have the digging instinct...just some dig more than others. They can't help it! Don't punish him! That is cruel...he probably doesn't even know why he's being punished! Is he outside or inside dog. If he is an inside dog..maybe go outsid ewith him. If not your best bet is to find him a better home that doesn't mind a digging dog. Anyone who gets a dog should be prepared for digging. No one should ever punish a dog for this! I hope you find him a good home!

We are dealing with the same thing. I work for a vet & there's not a darn thing you can do. You can try to put their feces in the hole, but they'll just dig somewhere else. Dr prescribed some "doggie prozac" to calm him a little. We are doing the only thing that can be done, we are putting in a kennel. A big one. You can do field fence on the ground with peet gravel on top. Otherwise, you'll have to do cement.

Is your canine spayed yet? canine, the two woman and male will dig to get out of a backyard pre-warmth cycle. it may additionally be social purely as a results of fact she is bored and needs yet another canine to play with. i'd attempt some bitter Apple from the vet or puppy shop. once you notice her digging positioned some on your finger and wipe interior her mouth. with any luck in time she would be able to connect digging to a dose of the bitter Apple and stop digging. you additionally can use warm sauce, vinegar or lemon juice. only different subject to objective is a marvel collar to stop the habit of digging.

Are you sure that is the lesson you want to teach your son, that pets are disposable?
This lesson carries on to other aspects of life, such as relationships..If it causes any problems, just leave the wife and kids and get another..Seriously.
Dogs are given to us to teach unconditional love, but it seems that the dog is the only partner in this..Because a lovely yard is so much more important..
Shelties are a working breed. if you don't give them a job, they will create their own....Your dog would be a good candidate for agility classes..or obedience trials...Teaching him a new job, and getting involved with it is the only real answer..or re-landscaping your yard..Your dog WILL go bonkers in a kennel..Nobody will win...

.Obsessive behavior indicates intelligence, so he will be a willing student.

You can have a happy dog and kid that digs in only one place if you set up an area and allow him to dig in that one place. Some people sometimes create a digging pit that's a lot like the sandboxes many of us kids played in when we were young.

Here are some ideas:

My lab mix was also a digger. We filled the hole with her poop, covered it with a little dirt and she eventually got the idea that digging led to poop and she stopped. Good luck!

It's hardcore but it works. Sprinkle some Cayenne pepper around the fence and in spots you don't want him to dig. My grandpa used to do it and it works. Don't worry he'll be OK.

NEVER hit your dog! that only tells your dog to be afraid of you, and will more than likely lead to aggression on your dog's part. and you will never establish the kind of healthy dominant-submissive relationship that you want to have with your pet!
