The ideas of atheism are not to shun religion, but to idealize the fact that there may not be a religion at all. In some cases, people do bounce from religion to religion in order to find that one true belief. However, yes, many do not seek other religions and give up. There can be many reasons for this:

1) The person does not believe in religion because they are content with life as it is, so there is no need to idealize a better/more harmonious place when what they have will suffice if not supercede the notions of religion.

2) The person does not believe in religion because they have had bad experiences with other religion(s), meaning that they havent found what they were looking for, haven't thought much into a metaphysical state, or they just don't believe that they have the time to strengthen their faith in order to be religious.

3) The person does not believe in religion because they believe that they are the highest in the metaphysical chain. Superiority is already theirs, so if they wish to find a religion, they would only be lowering themselves to an ideal that may or may not be real.

4) Lastly, the person does not believe in religion because of rebellion (ie, their whole family is baptist, and the person doesn't agree with the family's morals, so the person doesn't believe in said religion).

But in what you stated, you are correct for a number of individuals whom are out there and do not consider religion in general.

I never had a religion in the first place. It just hasn't been part of my life. I have always loved mythology and history and I view all religions in that aspect. They are a great yarn but never something I would seriously entertain as the truth.

I don't really classify myself as anything - but you should note that you can't be an Atheist and believe there is a God/s at the same time. They are mutually exclusive.

Perhaps you do not know what Atheism is. Atheism is the lack of belief in a god, any god. Someone who believed in God would not be an Atheist. I don't doubt there are many people who believe in God and who shift religions because they find out exactly what those religions mean and stand for. But an Atheist doesn't have such problems.

What do you mean? I always thought that Atheism WAS a religion! Isn't it?

I mean think about it. An Atheist no longer believes in God for one reason or another. It sounds to me, that you and I might share a belief in God. But have you ever really talked to one? Their un-belief, is stronger than our be-lief!

You ask an Atheist if he or she believes in God? And quicker than a trumpet can blast, they'll shout "NO"! Ask one if they believe that Jesus is coming back soon? And before you can develop a twinkling of an eye, they will scream again.. "NO, now leave me alone"!

But ask one, if he or she believes the sun will rise in the morning as it did today, and they might answer.. "Duh. Of course it will you idiot"! I tell you, that they have more faith in their little toe to believe in that, than we do in our whole bodies. You see, I CAN"T have faith in the sun coming up tomorrow!

I'm just sorry that their faith was so weak in the first place, that they stopped believing! I think their faith in God never really had a chance to develop in the first place! A preacher might have made them mad by thinking that the Sunday sermon was aimed straight at them; or you know how every church seems to have it's own little cliques.. maybe someone said something they didn't like, and out the door they went.

But in all seriousness, their un-belief is quite powerful!

Yes I did. I found that all formal religions are influenced by humans, and that their respective dogma is of human invention, not God's.

Example: Someone 2000 years ago writes something down and claims it is inspired by God. And an entire population sucks that up, and evolves a religion. Yet If I were to walk up to you right now, and claim what I say is inspired by God, you'd say I was crazy or a liar. Why do you accept the word of a mysterious unnamed human who died centuries ago, but not mine? You have an unexplainable double standard in your plausiblity judgements.

Example 2: Any organization, including a religious one, has inherently one goal - to perpetuate itself. Every religion adapts to each generation, changing the rules (or interpretation of rules) to respond to it's potential audiences. It used to be a sin to eat meat on Fridays in the Catholic religion. Now it's not. Which is it. St. Christopher was a saint, now he's not. The ten commandments are different in the jewish version of the OT than the Christian version of the Old Testament. Clearly, the rules are not based on God's wish, but on human whim or interpretation. Otherwise, they would be consistent between beliefs and through the passage of time.

In a nutshell, this is the root of the atheist view of religions (in my opinion). The rules of every organized religion are clearly human in origin, and therefore not worthy of our unquestioning faith.

An atheist doesn't believe there is a God. Did you mean agnostic maybe? I looked into many religions before I realized that I just didn't believe that there is a God and never really had.

If one believes in any gods, then they are not Atheists, but Agnostic.

Never thought of considering believing. I have taken the time to research religions, of which I have no interest in joining. Using religious writings, it is possible to gain insight into the civilizations from whence the works came.

i am not looking for any points, only to make a statement. if you are living as if there is NO GOD, you better be right! i have looked at the end of the book, have you? no eye has seen no ear has heard what GOD has in store for those who love him. you Atheist reverse that scripture and see your future. you may find that our lord who sent his only son to die on Calvary's tree for sins to set us free, is a god of permissive will! what does that mean? you are aloud to make a choice, the wide road or the narrow one.are you willing to gamble eternal life or cast into eternal fire? none of you have ever been able to back up your statement of non belief with anything substantial. one last question, do you know the definition of HELL. it's total separation from GOD no hope, no lite.

I am agnostic but I have looked into umpteen religions, read a lot about each of them, had discussions and arguments. Nothing worked because I found that in the end I am the one and the same and that god is a spirit (you can give it whatever name you want) that exists within each of us. It all starts with me.

Once free of his overly baptist grandma's house, my x-husband(and best friend) read everything at our public library about the religions men believe. He went even so far to talk to me and my preacher about differing baptist views on things. Years later, he found no peace, until he discovered that he did not need a belief structure to survive this life(or the promise of a better place). I could see a peace land in his heart, the same one I myself have about God(christian, if you must label me),and to this day we both tell our children to feel it out for themselves.
