Lack of respect for others may be increasing this problem, It all depends on the direction of society as a whole in the future

Probably the opposite. Parents these days are all about blaming everything BUT their children for any shortcomings. Didn't get a perfect score on that test? The teacher isn't good enough, the kid has ADHD, the doctor must have caused anoxic brain injury during the delivery, the therapist isn't properly dealing with the separation issues from the divorce. The child is always good, great, FABULOUS. It couldn't possibly be because they didn't study. We're creating a society of overly inflating egos where esteem is build on falsely elevated ideals so that true achievement is meaningless.

We are worrying TOO much about our kid's self esteem to the point where they will be unable to function in the real world. We praise them for the littlest thing, do not pressure them to do anything too hard, and don't follow through on life's lessons. So when they get older they will go to work and come home and cry because their boss was mean to them today and we'll have to call the boss and ask him why he was mean to our little precious baby. But the kid will feel great about himself for just having gone into work that day! Good job Johnny!

My parents didn't give a crap about my self esteem and I turned out fine.

Likely, yes, though of course as always there will be outstanding people that break the norm. As long as our society continues to accept the degradation of the natural family unit (Mom, dad, kids) the kids (the future) will suffer for it. Kids were meant to have both a mom and a dad. Sometimes circumstances take that away from us, but more and more these days we're choosing an incomplete family for our kids out of wedlock. Each parent teaches a kid different thing. Same sex teaches how to act, opposite sex teaches how to expect to be treated, so when one is missing....

my lack of self esteem is based on the basic facts that society has conditioned me to believe that if i don't look a certain way and have certain materialistic possessions or high aspiring goals at life i am not worth anything and here the clash between my learned book of logic and my care free character come into play. i find myself torn between the feelings of insecurities and mental capacity to understand that what i feel to be true and oppressing and self destructive is WRONG. yet still feel inferior enough not to be able to change it knowing the truth that sucks for me
