India is a huge country and every state has it's own language. In the west you have Marathi & Gujrati in the south you have 4 diffrent languages i.e. Malyalam, Tamil, Kananda and Telgu out of which tamil being farely popular with neighbouring south east asia countries too. Then in the East you have 2 languages such as Bengali and Bihari. All the way up North is entirely dominant by Hindi and Punjabi. As the Prime Ministers/Presidents Office uses Hindi/English to address the nation Hindi is by far more considered as the national language of India. Hindi is spoken and understood by a majority of the population unlike Telgu.

While Hindi is the widest spread language - almost all people in India speak English - and do it happily ... even though this is a hold over from British occupation ... the government makes sure that English is still taught to allow its people to work comfortably in today's marketplace.
