I am an adult survivor of child abuse and need to find a support group soon. I don't have insurance and would love to get counseling from a therapist.
I live in Burlington County NJ. Any ideas where to start?

Thank you all for your support and kind words! I found a support group for adult survivors of child abuse. I hope all victims can find help somehow and eventually find peace.

Use www.rainn.org.

I'm a survivor too, they helped me find local resources. Also, they helped me find a place to get training to become a hotline and hospital advocate at a local rape crisis center.

Some abusive parents are narcissists. These individuals have very low self-esteem, usually from some kind of abuse in their own childhoods, and they cope by creating a falsely inflated self and by looking to others for "narcissistic supply" -- admiration, attention, etc....To these individuals, everything is about them. Some will even that say that outright, with pride. They are highly manipulative and lack empathy. (As soon as the subject turns to you, they lose interest!)

If you think one or the other of your parents may be a narcissist, there's a great on line forum/support group, Narcissistic Personality Disorder Refuge at http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/NPDR

Call your local hospital and ask for the Behavioral Health or Social Services department. They can help you find someone to counsel you.

Also, if you have a Victim's Advocates group in your city-this would be listed in the phone book.

Girl, I wish I knew what to tell you. I would first recommend looking in your telephone directory under "mental health". I have been searching for the same thing in my area with no results. I would next get in contact with a mental health professional for a possible referral. Many times there is help in your community for little or no cost. Good luck with your search. I hope you find what you need.
