Sorry for the confusion caused by my previous statement. I was meant to say that is it ok to give my dog rawhide to chew on? Will there be any side effect? He is constantly hungry and wanting to chew on something. He will chew on furniture instead if there's no rawhide available.

I would check with your vet to be sure.

Rawhides are never a good choice for dogs. The rawhide will expand in their digestive system causing a serious blockage. The only way to correct this is with surgery, surgery that runs on average from $1,000 to $1,500.
Your vet should have weight control treats that you can give your dog. If not, I know Petco has an entire isle full of dog treats. Many of them are weight control.

those rawhide chews are such a problem. please do not give them to your dog. plain old milk bones are the best treat, but not too many. the rawhide will sometimes get all soft and stay in the stomach. the dog can not pass it . I have assisted in too many surgeries where we had to go into the stomach or intestines and remove them. not a pleasant thing for anyone to go through. the dogs are so sick it breaks my heart. cow hooves and pig ears are just as bad

Rawhides are not a good idea. Try giving him ice most dogs either love it or hate it. Besides its free and there is no way that that can hurt his diet.

Rawhide is terrible for dogs. They can not digest it. Try Purina Fit and Trim and low cal treats BUT NO RAWHIDE.

Be VERY careful with Rawhide, it has been known to cause Digestive Problems (it swells in their Stomach); so I have been told. I buy 5in. or longer Soupbones which he loves to chew on(after boiling,of course).

Rawhide wouldn't be my first choice. Search the web for treats you can make at home that will adhere to his diet.

Stick to the diet. Rawhides are treats! and no known nutritional value in them.

I don't know what rawhide is but it sounds bad to give to your dog.

If you're looking for a good dog chew, instead of giving rawhide (which dogs can't digest) give your dog "Bully Sticks" http://www.kninekountry.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=KK&Category_Code=BS

Bully sticks are 100% beef tendon and are fully digestable, my dogs LOVE them
